Tying gills

A fisherman I was fishing by showed me his fly that he was having good luck with. I wanted to tie some but don't know exactly how the gills were tied. He said it was a Humprey's Green Drake Nymph available from Oris. I can't find it on the interent. This fly has brown hackle-feather-fibers tail and legs, yellowish dubbed abdomen and thorax, a wingcase that looks like it might be pheasent tail fibers, and gray gills protruding from the abdomen. The gills look to be gray ostrich herl. The herl seems to be three feathers in each of three clumps tied across the adbomen in three places, one clump near the tail, one midway and one near the wingcase. It's the gills that have me puzzled as how best to tie them on. Tie them on and dub around them? It doesn't look like that was the way it was done, but maybe. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Sorry, no picture.
