Keep at it, you'll figure out what works best for you.

Leader doesn't usually make good weed guards unless it's of the hard nylon type. Most is much too soft to be effective. It may work fine to begin with, but after it gets crushed a few times, it won't have enough stiffness to guard against snags. Hard Mason type is what you want for weed guards.

bigjim is correct on Mason Hard Type Nylon Leader as the best for constructing weed guards, I've found the 16lb test to be the best.

Been tying up some poppers in the last few days using ear plugs. Whole one for bass, cut in half for bluegill. very cheap and we'll see how they fish. I expect it to work quite well, but not be as durable as cork, deer hair or closed cell foam. Very easy tie though. Can crank them out in no time.
