Can you give a bit more information such as where are you fishing, when, and what type of flies? There can be a huge range in hook sizes for trout. For example, if you're fishing streamers for trout you might use size 4 - 10. If you're fishing dries it could be anywhere from 10 - 24, depending on location and time of year, etc and hopper patterns can get even bigger.

A good place to look in addition to asking here is a hatch chart for the water you fish. Do a search of the name of the river or lake and 'hatch chart' or check a local fly shop and see what you find. Usually in addition to telling you what flies to use when, they also give hook sizes.

William has it right, but if you are looking for generalities, I tie most of my flies on sizes 10 through 16. Some a little smaller some a little bigger.

There are some locations where you need super tiny flies if your gonna catch trout, and some places where bigger flies are better. The advice to check with your local fly shop or trout unlimited chapter for specifics is good advice.
