Default New poppers for tomorrow's smallmouth trip

Well, I'm clearly not a professional, but this is the second set of poppers I've made. Please critique what I've got here so I can improve.

The bodies are "hand carved with scissors" white crosslinked foam. Decorated with some high quality sharpie markers.

The rest is colored deer hair and thread.

This is fly number 6 and 7 for me overall, so laugh if you want but these puppies are hitting the water tomorrow Click the image to open in full size.Click the image to open in full size.Click the image to open in full size.Click the image to open in full size.

We can't tell you if top water is working tomorrow but those are good enough to get some strikes. Always show up with a subsurface game in your back pocket if you are concerned about not getting skunked.

I do have some subsurface stuff...its not near as much fun as watching them smack the top water, but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Nothing wrong with those. Fish aren't gonna care if a line isn't straight or an eye is off a bit. They look like fish catchers to me.

Smallmouth and largemouth are 2 different critters.

Largemouth need the wiggly stuff like hackle and legs to appear lifelike when "at rest"

Smallmouth on the other hand like "fast food".
You want your poppers to be aerodynamic so they can be cast a distance and retrieved quickly. There's no need for legs, just the head and tail.
I don't paint mine either, they'd never see it.

Not 'always' true. Lot's of surface SMB strikes occur for me in the very hot months on a dead drift with a hopper pattern. Shake the tip to give it a little wiggle now and
then.

Couldn't agree more. Beautiful paint jobs are to hook and land anglers.

That becomes clear on a good top water day after you catch 20 fish on the same foam popper. It continues to work even though it doesn't even vaguely resemble the fancy fly you may have started with.

Well guys, they got a few strikes, but no fish...i think they may have been too large for the fish. I switched to a smaller black popper my dad had made, and managed to nab a couple. The most exciting part of the trip wasn't the fishing though ....it was the half mile hike/wade out in the pouring rain after I misjudged a storm. Ha-ha. The thunder, lightening, and wind had me a little nervous. Seeing all the downed trees on the drive home made me feel lucky. Anyway it was exciting.
