I don't know much about the Medalist but if memory serves don't they click at about every quarter rev? No clicker on the 'R'.
Cliff, the drag is very similar to the automotive brake shoe principal.
The thing that I really like about this reel is the machining which is super tight toleranced and as clean as any I've seen. The frame and spool walls seem paper thin yet robust... sorta like when Bauer EDM'd the sides of the LOHR model, thin yet strong.
The bearings are far and away some of the smoothest turning I've tried.
