Default Orvis Clearwater new lines $11. Is this junk?

Orvis Clearwater Fly Lines are on sale and there is an additional 20% discount for presidents weekend. After all the savings they are only $11. I have 6 reels that all have lines from 1983 or earlier. Most of them seem to cast fine but i have been told that the line technology has advanced quite a bit. It looks like these are "beginner" lines but shouldn't they be an improvement over the really old stuff I have. I am a beginner but Have spent enough time practicing that I think I am an OK caster. Why would I not want these lines? Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Here is the orvis description: Front loop for easy and fast leader attachment. A weight-forward floating line with a special taper to help first-time casters. Makes a great spare line as well. Fluorescent yellow color for easy visibility. 80'. USA.
Fly line in weights: 3-9.

Not junk, but it is not top quality. Be a good backup or maybe one year.

That stuff does float I will say that. I guess the thing that I find negative is they have a little bit of a memory. Like I said, they are not junk and a great choice on a budget.

Thanks for the heads-up! I just ordered line, leader, and backing for my back-up reel for less than $25! Life is good!

I've never had an Orvis product I didn't like. I think lines are becoming like everything else, overrated. I'm still fishing with lines I bought in the mid to late 1990's and they seem fine to me. They cast fine, they float fine, and I continue to catch fish even though I don't upgrade my fly lines

I have bought all of my Spey fly lines on closeout and don't have $100 in all three. They are 2 Scientific Angler short heads and a Rio mid Spey that I paid only 22 dollars for because it was a 2008 line. They float and cast perfectly and have caught many fish.

Cheap Orvis Lines = GO FOR IT
