Default Making Indicators out of fly line

Someone suggested this idea on here and it sounds great but I'm having trouble.

The concept is to take the core out of a fly line so that it is hollow, cut it into 1"-1.5" strips, slide them onto your leader and use it as a floating indicator or small sighter. I use this with store bought indicators of the same type, but would like to make my own.

I am having trouble de-core-ing the line. I have tried slowly cutting the sides with scissors, razor blades and wire cutters to no avail. It seems the core and the fly line are too bonded to seperate.

Anyone else do this? Any ideas?

Maybe try an electrician tool that strips wire. It's like a pliers but has many different sized holes in the jaws that cut precisely through wire insulation to the diameter of the wire then you slide off the insulation, in this case it would be the fly line coating off the core. But if the core is bonded to the coating, I don't see how you can accomplish this. And a good wire cutter tool will cost more than a couple dozen of the store bought indicators.

I like to make stuff too, but sometimes it just doesn't add up.

Good luck!

Braided core or mono? Could make a difference. Also, have you tried heating the fly line with a hair dryer before trying to pull the core out?
