Fly Line Color

I have often wondered about fly line color and in particular bright colored line on smaller waters. I have been leaning toward using more muted color line when fishing small streams. Does anyone thinks it matters one way or the other?

For still waters I do think a 'neutral' coloured fly line brings something to the Party. For rivers .... rather doubt it dependent upon what you have strung on the end of same.

I've still got one bright colored line but the others are a more natural tone. Will replace my bright line soon as it develops enough wear. May not make a difference but it just does not look right to me. After years of trying to hide myself, gear, and everything else it just seems bright lines have no place. I wear clothing to blend in and then throw a bright line. One or the other is not needed!

Re: Fly Line Color

I did a casual experiment with bright lines vs. 'natural' colored lines a couple years ago, mostly on still waters, but also on a couple three streams. The short version of my findings were that I found that only when the water was extremely clear, shallow, and slow moving water did line color have any apparent effect.

On a personal note, there are times when I like throwing brighter lines (i.e., low light levels, heavy wind, fast currents) especially if I'm throwing farther than 60 ft. But at this point in my FF career I'd have to say that probably 90% of the time I throw neutral-colored lines.

Peace.

If you use the search feature at the top of the page, there are several extensive threads covering this.

I like bright, flashy lines only for instucting and practice for obvious reasons. For fishing I see no reason to use bright lines and so I avoid them.

Ditto DD. This has been debated ad nauseam here.

Personally, color means nothing to me. The most important thing is presentation. You'll catch more fish if you worry about that. Just get a line color easy for you to see.

Thanks for the imput on this. I guess you can go either way. I do lean toward muted color lines for small water. I have however used bright line most of my life and still caught fish. Just wondered how many more would have been caught with not so bright line.
