Rio Gold on my Z too. It just feels right. Lots of feel and it just flies off the tip of the rod in close or far away.

The other heavier tapers, Grande/GPX, felt too heavy and dumbed down the rod.

I own this rod and fish a RIO Gold #5 on it. RIO and Sage being owned by the same holding company, Farbank, it was natural for Sage to utilize the Gold in the Z-'s development; they did the same with the newer ONE. Neither of these rods need to be nor are happy being overloaded and the Gold is a true #5. Excellent a design as the Gold is, another line that works equally well with this rod is SA's Mastery Expert Distance Taper. Its design is similar to Gold's with an extended head and long rear taper. While I believe they would perform equally, I went Gold as it was what the Sage rod designer employed.

I also have RIO Grandes and SA GPX's rigged for other outfits and have tried them on both Z-Axis and ONE. Not only, in my experience, do both of these rods fish better with the true-to-weight #5's but the two 1/2 size heavy lines have inferior taper designs for the type of presentations these two generations of top-tier Sages excel at. The hinging effect of the blunt transition from head to running line in both, especially in GPX, really limits their mending, reaching and roll casting attributes.
