Default How to attach a 8wt fly line to the backing?

I have two new 8wt fly lines that I plan to attach to two spools that already have 30lb backing on them. I'll use these to fish for bass, steelhead and trout if it matters.

My question is, what knot should I use to tie the backing to the fly line? This will be my first time doing it. I want to make sure my new fly lines don't go swimming down the river with my first fish!

Thanks,

Todd

The best knot for that is the tarpon or Albright knot. Very easy to tie.

I use a nail knot to connect backing to flyline.

If the flyline has a welded loop in it, i'd go with a bimini in the backing, bit of a pain to tie (for me at least) but neat and strong once you get them down. I like the loop to loop connections as it makes it so much easier to switch lines.

Thanks for the suggestion.

One line is the Rio Versi Tip II which I think may not have a loop at the back. I'm deciding on the second fly line now and won't know until I buy it.

Like Almonde, I, too, prefer a loop connection, but I just use a triple surgeon's knot (overhand knot) in my backing. If my fly line doesn't have a rear loop I'll whip finish one onto the line. Had to do that with my SA Supra and lower end SA lines. Also, make sure that the loop in your backing is large enough to pass the entire fly line spool through so you can make your loop to loop connection.

The bimini is a great knot but overly complicated for the marginal extra strength it offers. The Albright is also a great knot when there is no loop.
