Default Help with Furled Leaders

Hello, I need opinions on furled leaders. I wish to save money and make my own leaders instead of buying them. I want to know, are furled leaders worth my time or should I go ahead and buy my leaders? Thank you!

I went through this same dilemma this winter. Considering how long they are purported to last I decided to just buy them from Zen Outfitters.
Maybe somewhere down the road I'll start making them, but it just didn't make sense considering the costs of making a setup, time, and learning curve.
You may decide otherwise.

Set up a jig this winter and made several leaders. Fun and not that hard to do. Just followed several sites and videos. Now we will see how they work over the next several months.

I've yet to make any furled leaders, but have purchased several. I like them depending on the type of fishing I'm doing. I also tie single strand leaders & the cost of the line & time is more than it would be if I simply purchased them.

Furled leaders use a lot more line than single strand leaders, so the cost might not make it worth it. However, I like tying my own leaders as I can adjust them to fit any situation I might encounter, and I use line that is also used on some of my spinning & baitcasting tackle, so the cost is not confined to just making leaders.

For me, saving money has not been a primary factor in using furled leaders or in tying leaders. If it was, I would stick with purchasing them ready made.

There is a lengthy thread about furled leaders in the General Discussion section of this Forum. There seems to me to be a divide between those using them for ease, economy and convenience and some of us striving to expand the realm of leader design performance.

A few years back I bought Quite a few & caught heaps of Fish with them I still like them in The Big Rivers as well as Dry Fly Fishing in The River however even though A Mate & many others swear by them whilst Stillwater Fishing I've gone off them whilst Lake Fishing from The Bank although I think it would be a different situation out of a Boat.
I looked around & spent heaps of time for info on how to make My Own in Different Lengths for different Applications
As you have found Furled Leaders & The Board to Make them aren't all that hard to make finishing them off is a bit of a pain at First.
There are many Materials you can make them from also now there are many sites which tell you how to Make The Board for Different length Leaders.
Really I couldn't ever see myself going into production to Sell them.

Brian.

Brian.

I use straight Fluoro on my sinking lines. I see no reason for a tapered leader on them. In fact it could be a hindrance. Leader sinks at a different rate than the line forming a belly meaning miss strikes.
I will use a furled leader on my floating line on Stillwater. This way I can shorten tippet and fish dries or surface feeders, OR I can attach 10 feet or more tippet and still be able to cast.
