Default 4wt Sharkskin Taper?

Hey Guys,

I have a 4wt loomis 9' Metolious then I am need for another line.

I use this rod high stick nymph fish, as well as czech. Its basically my "bobber" rod.

I am torn between the Sharkskin Ultimate Trout Taper or the GPX Taper...

Mending is CRUCIAL with high sticking, so I need a line that can mend well, yet shoot my indie set up out to distant runs if need be.

I know the UTT will mend fine, however I am getting drawn to the GPX because it will shoot my set up out where I need too...However, how is the mending with the GPX?
I am assuming since the SS lines come of the water so much easier than any other line out there, regardless of the taper, it should mend better than most lines anyway?

Thanks guys, help me out!! thanks!!

How about a 5 weight Ultimate Trout Taper? Give it some thought.

MP,

What would be the benefits in using the 5wt on the 4wt?

If I was going to overline it, should I gowith the GPX instead as its a half size heavier than what it says? Also, not sure if the Metoulius 9' 4wt would handle an additional line size?

Any thoughts and suggestions, keep them coming!!! thanks MP!

I use a Sharkskin Trout Taper on my 9ft 4wt Streamdance Metoulius as well.
I only do dry fly fishing with it. I am very impressed with it's amendability..

Overlining will load up the rod more to lob bobber/nymph rigs. The rod will bend further in the blank to keep the loop more open. That can help eliminate tangles.

Using a 5 weight Ultimate Trout Taper on a 4 weight rod will give you the benefits of uplining, plus it will have the extended belly for increased line control.

Thank you guys!

You dont think the 5wt line on the 4wt rod, with an indicator set up would be TOO much?

thanks!!

The extra mass will actually help you. I know of some people who upline up to two line weights on their nymph rods without any issues.

MP!

Thank you sir!

And if I decided to hit the stream using only dries on occasion, the 5wt line on my 4wt would not hurt the performance and accuracy at all?
And you still think the UTT instead of the GPX?

It shouldn't hurt dry fly performance.

If you plan on making long drifts, go with the UTT. The extended belly will make all the difference.

I have (2) loomis GLX HLS rods...both 9'6...Since they are very fast, would it be advantageous to go with the GPX? Or stick with the UTT if I am going to be mending?

thanks!!!
