Type of pattern Dry fly
Originator of pattern if known Variation of Art Flick's Red Quill and older English Red Quill patterns
Tied and Submitted by Hardyreels
Level of tying experience needed to tie this pattern Intermediate, a little more complicated pattern, previous experience tying different types of patterns helpful
Materials listed in order of tie in:
Hook 1 x long fine wire dry fly hook, size 12-16
Thread Brown or ginger thread, ginger brown silk here
Wing Slate mallard wing slips, upright and split (divided)
Tail Mixed ginger and medium dun hackle barbs
Body Stripped peacock herl, lacquered for strength
Throat Mixed ginger brown, and medium dun
Head lacquered ginger brown silk here (or use brown or ginger thread)
Special tying notes Tying with quill bodies and good quality hackles will produce a fly that will float high and long while producing a very buggy silhouette. Always soak the quills in water after you strip the barbs and prior to tying them on. Soaking makes them supple so they don't break when you wind them on. Lacquer after tying for strength.
Target species Trout
Fishing notes This pattern is a great imitation of the male Hendrickson duns, and both sexes of Hendrickson spinners. It also matches many other mayfly spinners.
