Default LL Bean Meridien Disc I

Hi all. I picked up this reel last year for $20. I bought it and a 6' 6" Eagle Claw Feather Light Rod to catch blue gills with my 4yr old son (he uses spincast with worm and bobbin). Well, this summer I started fly fishing the local river and quickly fell in love with chasing trout! I plan to replace the rod with a decent 4wt. I can't find any info on the web for this reel though. Is it a decent enough reel to get me through a summer or two? I believe it's about the right size for a 4/5 wt rod but not sure. The design looks similar to a CFO. Any info you can provide would be very much appreciated!

For $20, you have a very functional trout reel. The Meridian Series of reels was a staple in the LL Bean line up for years. I believe the Meridian 1 that you own was rated for 3 to 5 weight rods, so it should be the right fit for your future 4 weight.

The disk drag is a time tested design that has been used on many different reels (possibly like older CFOs or older Scientific Anglers). It isn't the smoothest or the most powerful. But, hey... it's a trout reel.

I ended up getting a 7' 6" 4wt from Cabela's. This reel is too heavy. Any suggestions on something lighter?

orvis is offering a sale on their BBS reels right now, PLUS it seems they'll throw in a free extra spool. $100 for the BBS II for 3-5 wt lines, weighing in at 3.5 oz. can't imagine you'lll need anything lighter. nice reel.
