Default New fly reel for my TFO Axiom suggestion?

So I have been looking for a new fly reel for my new 5wt TFO Axiom. I currently have a Ross Reel FlyStart 2. I love this reel and its been good to me but its time to retire it. Pulled in Steelies with ease and tons of smallies.
I mainly target smallies and sometimes need the drag to pull them out of the current. But I do in the winter target steelhead with my 5wt and its a blast.

So my line up that I am looking for is not to break the bank but get a quality reel for the money.

Basspro osprey
G loomis Venture
TFO Prism
Cabelas Watershed (last years Ross Rythm they said)
Orvis Battenkill
Lamson Konic
Ross Flyrise
Cabelas RLS
Pflueger Trion

I personally have the Gloomis venture, but the biggest size #7. The drag is nice and smooth. No click on the retrieve but has a nice soft "buzz" with line going out. Real easy to take care of too. Another reel you can consider is a Teton, I've seen a few go on ebay for $50. I just got a Teton specialist 10 for $80 and all I had to do was oil up a few moving parts. Really strong drag, locked all the way down they can really hold any big fish. Only problem is the company stopped making replacement parts for them, they were sold and started making newer reels. I've only heard good things about the battenkill and trion. And the only negative thing i've heard about the konic is that they get really bent out of shape from any drop. Hope this helps out some.

On my first TFO rod I got a TFO prism reel. I don't like it because the drag loosens up when you pull out more line to make casts. My other rod has an Orvis BBS II and I like it, drag stays set even when I pull line out. Did you see the reels that are for sale here that a guy posted?

You couldn't go wrong with a Ross CLA, well built here in the USA. They have a great drag, they're tough; I've used mine for everything from trout to redfish in the salt.

I have them in a variety of sizes and love them all...

Hi Smallieman,

I think from that list I would go with the Lamson Konic or the Orvis Battenkill. You don't say which Battenkill you are considering. However for less than half the money I would consider one of the Allen Fly Fishing reels. The Konic is a high pressure cast reel and the Allen reel is CNC machined. The Allen reel is not only CNC machined but it is very well finished and the tolerances are very close. You won't find a better reel in the $50 range. The Battenkill is also a machined reel and finished well.

Frank

Hi smallieman,

I would go with either the Battenkill Mid-Arbor or with one of the Allen reels offered on this forum. I recommend the Battenkill Mid-Arbor because of experience with the reel and it's excellent drag; and I recommend the Allen reels based on the cost & reviews of the very experienced folks on this forum.

Congrats on the Allen Reel. Heard a lot of good things about that reel. On another note, if in fact the Cabela's is last years Ross Rythm that would get my attention.
