Default What is that nub located opposite of the retrieve handle on these reels?

On almost every reel I see, there is a short little nub - usually chrome in color, sitting adjacent to each other. What is the purpose or what is it for?

Thanks.

I have a Ross reel built before they started putting the counterweights on them. I good fish taking line can practically shake that reel right out of your hands.
