Default Double Pawl

I have an Abel Pt5 and an Abel Super 4. The Pt5 is before the outgoing click was added to the Abel line up. The Pt5 is single pawl. The Super 4 is also a single pawl. I believe when the Super Series was changed - i.e Super 4n in lieu of the Super 4, Abel went to a Double Pawl system. My question is simply this - what's the difference?

Cheers,
Mike.

Hi Mike. From all of my Abel reading, Steve Abel preferred to hear line coming in, and not going out.... The addition of an outgoing click was consumer driven. I'd prefer the opposite, and some people like silent in both directions. I doubt the outgoing click adds any notable resistance to the drag, and that would seem to be the only possible effect of dual pawls.

The Super 4N and Super 4 are two different animals completely. The Super 4N is narrower, taller, and lighter than the previous Super 4.

Abel uses double pawls on reels from Super 6N and up. The whole idea is to have a redundant pawl just in case one went bad. For trout sized reels, the second pawl is unnecessary. For larger game, it is just extra insurance.

The story that I got (although I cannot confirm it) is that some big game fly fishers wanted double pawls because Tibor had them. Steve Abel was so confident in his design, that he kept the single pawl design. After Steve sold the company, the new Abel management responded to its consumer base and added the second pawl.

I have a follow up ?, what would be the main difference between an Abel super 6 and an Abel Super 6N?
- size
- double pawl

anything else?

Was the super 6 a great reel as well?
