You may want to check out the 2013 Lamson Speedster. It has the silky smooth conical drag, but it sports the taller, but skinnier, spool.

I think that Lamson finally listened to its harshest critics.

A little larger in diameter and a little narrower in width has been a year in waiting. What do you Waterworks/Lamson loyalists think about this new model? I would also add in this same catogory the Hardy Ultralite DD, also extra large diameter and even narrower with a stacked drag assembly.

I am really fond of Ross Evolution reels. However is was ogling the Nautilus FWX the other day and it felt so sweet.

I would definitely take a second look at that new Lamson

There are some dandy old Orvis Battenkill reels listed on eBay right now. These were made in England during the 80's & 90's by BFR I think. Great reels usually under 75 dollars in sizes 3/4 - 5/6 and so on.

They come in either spring & pawl or disc drag and are good solid reels. I have used the sizes 3/4 clicker and the 8/9 disc for salmon and trout for years. Solid stock at good price, that's an option.
