Best reel for Winston 8' 4wt tmf ?

You didn't ask about lines, but I'll throw one out for future consideration. The TMF was described in Winston catalogs of the Tom Morgan era of ownership as a 3 1/2 weight rod. Terenzio Silk Fly lines are available in the half sizes. Contact A.B. Herndon Rod Co. up in Washington and they can order one for you. I have several and they make a lot of difference in the way rods fish. It would be the icing on the cake, so to speak.

When I still had my "TMF" Winston 8' wt., I used to pair it with one of the old Scientific Anglers Mastery series in 4/5 weight, as I have spools for each line weight. The SA Mastery reels were British made, and were/are very light in the hand and balanced the rod perfectly.

Nowadays, you'll have to find a "used" version, as SA hasn't made the Mastery series of reels for a long time. Never did understand the reasons behind dropping that line of reels... Jerry, aka hairwing530

my2cents...Been a fan of Winston rods for quite a while - presently use mine with an ATH ARI 1 - perfect match. Suggest that or a Hardy Bougle's Ltd edition (one of the real macoy's)- each will balance well with your rod and each will increase in value over time... Think the Winston Vintage reel is too heavy for that rod. - I have one of those too... I collect reels.

I have a lightweight 8ft 4wt rod and I use an Orvis BBS II on it. It balances and is fun to use. Its also not too expensive.

How would the Abel TR1 work for a Winston GVX 7'6" 3 wt.? Also, would the dark olive color go well with the Winston green or clash? Thanks.
