Default Re: reel/line suggestions for 8Wt. 9' TFO BVK rod

I have both the BVK reel and a Hardy DD, as well as a BVK 8wt, 9' rod. Unfortunately, My BVK reel is the III for the 8wt rod, and my DD is a 5000 for my 5wt BVK rod. So comparing the drags is tough. I will say two things:

1. Both have super smooth drags.

2. When I disassembled the reels to switch from left to right hand retrieve, it was VERY obvious that they are incredibly similar reels. I didn't do it, but it looked as if the one-way clutch bearing could be swapped between them.

For my money, go with the reel designed to match the rod....the BVK. My BVK III reel and 8wt rod have handled Redfish to 14 pounds easily. With that said, if you are looking for something "stouter" you will need to jump a price point or two.

Thanks for all the advice everybody. This is super helpful. I'll likely go with the BVK or the Hardy on the reel... Any other thoughts on line? If I was to get two types, and we were using them primarily in the surf from New England to Florida? Or would it be best to get an all-around salt line and not spring the extra $200 for the second spool setup?

Maybe your Hardy dealer stocks Greys. I use their new GX900 8/9/10 reel matched to their XF2 Salt rod. Very nice balance, pleasure to fish with.
