He has a point. I have a 3+ finatic on my 5wt Helios, and a 5+ on my 7wt helios and may most likely get a 4+ to go on my 6wt (possibly an H2).

Those are large arbor spools so I lose some in backing capacity (dacron not gel spun) but it doesn't much matter for the trout around here.

BEFORE you buy anything, take what you read on this thread and then read this post about saltwater reels. The Hatch finatic series was second to only the Hardy Fortuna.

I don't fish saltwater (yet), but will probably stick with Hatch.

I agree the Hatch's run a little heavy and as others have done I've sized down when pairing up to my rods. The 3 plus works great on my 5wt and I aslo don't have the need for the extra backing that I could get on a 4 plus. Same goes for the 5 plus I use on my 7 wt.

The good thing is Hatch offers those models in a Mid Arbor which gets the backing capacity higher but then you lose a little on the retrieval rate...BUT the good thing is the reel will accept either spool so just pickup another spool with more backing if needed.

Shootgunfly, You loose nothing in retrieve rate by going with the mid arbor spool on Hatch reels. You put more backing on but it fills up to the same point relative to the reels' overall diameter so the arbor + backing diameter remains the same. A very good option for those that need plenty of backing. My Hatch trout reel is an original, slightly heavier 5+ which balances perfectly on my Z-Axis #5 though it is too heavy for my ONE #5, it gets the Nautilus FWX 5/6.
