I just purchased a Van Staal 7/8 from eBay for under $300. A substantial discount from "list." In reviewing various forums, there seems to be mixed comments regarding customer service, etc.

Mine is black and appears to be very nicely made. The claim it is fully machined out of bar stock, and has a removable, sealed drag. I did note that mine had a "made in China" sticker, which was a surprise.

I have not had it out yet, but plan to do some steelhead fishing soon. We'll see how it works in the real world.

I used a Van Staal on a redfish trip 5 or so years ago. It was new at the time, and it performed great. I was told shortly thereafter that the drag seized up to the point that the local shop couldn't even get it open, and it had to be sent back to Van Staal. I have no idea what happened from there.

If you want an awesome surfcasting spinning reel that can handle sand and being swam with, get a VS. If you want an awesome fly reel that can handle rough use get an Abel or Nautilus.

The only reel I would use from Van Staal, is their spinning reels. Even than, I would use my Shimano Stella SWs before them.

Like 2 posters above me. There is no comparison between Van Staal and Abel.
