Default Strange spool issue - Vintage Hardy Princess

I own three Lightweight Series reels and recently added a new to me Princess. When I received the reel and began to strip off the line and backing, I noticed silver paint all over my fingers. I removed line & backing and noticed that on the hub of the spool, you could see marks where the backing had been wrapped around the spool. The inside of the spool is most affected both on the ported side and backside. The outsides seem to be less or unaffected. It's almost like the paint or powder coating never took to the aluminum, it just brushes right off even with a paper towel little pressure.

The line that was on the reel was Wet Cell II.

I've never seen anything like this, wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar. I'm stumped.

Sounds like it was put away too many times with wet backing and link stored on it.

When I cleaned my father's '50s era Hardy St. John most of the finish inside the spool came off like that; probably, as mentioned, stored wet too many times.

Hi jason,

I think the guys have this one answered; perhaps some time in the trunk of the car as well during warm weather to add to the issue.

It makes a good case for not dunking reels I guess.

Thanks for the comments guys. Now what I have to do is figure out how to get this paint to either cure if possible or just flat out remove it. I cannot see myself adding line and backing to it knowing that the paint will keep coming off. Any thoughts on whether or not it will eventually cure or should I just remove it?

I'm obviously also considering another spool, preferably vintage to use. So if you know anyone that's willing to part with one, please keep me in mind

So I made contact on a couple of fronts and here's what I can share with you.

First, I contacted Hardy USA and exchanged emails with Ken Hodgen. Hardy does not refinish/repaint reels. Strike one.

I then gave Bill Archuleta a call and explained my situation. He's of the opinion that the old fly line may have been the culprit. He also does not finish or repaint reels any longer. He did offer some suggestions and I followed his recommendations:

Use Simple Green and a tooth brush to remove all loose paint, then rinse with water. I repeated this process 2 more times until the loose paint was removed from the inside of the spool.

Next, I used dishwashing soap and the toothbrush and rinsed with water. I dried it with a paper towel and it seems the loose stuff is gone. Let it air dry for a bit and swiped the inside and outsides of the spool with my finger. No more loose paint.

It looks like I going to be able to use this one after all. The inside has some paint missing but that will get covered by line and backing. There is some paint missing on the backside of the spool where the cog is but that will be covered once placed in the frame. More good news, the face of the spool has a sold coat of paint on it. If any of it has worn off, it's hardly noticeable.

I'll keep an eye on it for a few days just to be sure but I really think I'm in the clear now. If that proves it self out, all I need is line, backing and the right rod to put it on, then add water

Just thought I'd give you guys an update in case you run into this. Thanks for the comments guys.

From the "scar" marks left by the funky line and backing, long term damp storage is most obviously the culprit. But you did a great job cleaning the decomposed baked enamel from the spool and the Princess looks terrific. I long ago wished I had bought the Princess rather than the LRH as it is really better proportioned for a #5 line... Like Ard said, strive not to dunk your reels and even if you don't, always leave them out on your fishing gear table to fully dry for a couple days after you have fished.

Soon, between trip drying won't be my concern as on Monday you will all loose me to Montana with no digital access for a month and we will leave our rods rigged in the Tahoe's ceiling-mounted rod rack when not out on the River.

Thanks for the kudos S&S, I'm pleased with how it turned out all things considered. Thankfully I was able to salvage the spool and preserve the outer finish. I'm less concerned with the inside of the spool as it will soon be lined once I'm sure I've got all of the residue removed. It's been about a full day since the cleaning and so far so good.

I'm in agreement with you on the proportions of the both the Princess and LRH. The Princess is awaiting #5 line and the rod to mount it on.

Each time I fish, I allow the reel to air dry when I'm done for the day and never leave them in a vehicle for prolonged periods.

Have a great trip, I'm looking forward to hearing about your adventures upon your return. While you're away this time, will you be partaking in your annual fly line summit?
