condition is everything with the older vintage reels, 40 bucks maybe a bit more for pristine and a box...?

many people collect them and many people purchase them to fish them

there is no reason not to use the reel

The value of a Medalist depends on the year of manufacture and where it was made. Post a photo. Read the following references:

An old medalist may NOT fit into the rod seat of a modern fly rod. Some Medalists were made before rod seats and reel feet were standardized. If your Medalist does not fit, get parts from:

Yeah , 40 bucks is about right for your average US made medalist. The ones with DA after the model number.
An imported Medalist (CJ , AK , or RC) are more like $25
I use mine all the time. I've got 8 of 'em

yes, you should use it. They are very good reels and have a good track record. Obviously they are not made to the tight tolerances of newer reels but they can take a lot of abuse and keep on working.

Condition is subjective as I've read posts about people using goo gone and scrub pad and such on the spools to make them look well used and they sell for more.

Personally I'd fish it. I love all my medalists. Great reels.
