Default Old reels needed for Boy Scouts

I wasn't quite sure if this should be posted in the classifieds section or not.

I'm taking on the job of teaching the fly fishing merit badge at my son's Boy Scout Troop. It would be great if I could find a few old reels with or without line on them simply for Boy Scouts to work with while they learn how to load backing, line and properly tie the knots.

If you've got something like this and want to get rid of it inexpensively, please let me know.

Thanks,

Todd

Great merit badge, Todd. I do the same thing, and have found some amazing deals at yard sales, pawn shops, second hand stores and charity run thrift shops.
A secondary benefit is some high end tackle I've picked up for pennies on the dollar.
Quite often you can find complete outfits to gift the boys for just a few bucks. Thanks for taking the time to teach a boy useful skills, and character. They will remember it forever.

Thanks Siege!

I'll do some looking around. It would make things a lot easier if I had some old gear the Scouts could use to practice with. I'm friendly with the folks in a couple local fly shops. I plan to check with them too.

Thumbs up Re: Old reels needed for Boy Scouts

I have a Cabela's Prestige reel (5wt) and a spare spool that I'd be happy to send to any Boy Scout troop. I'm and old Eagle Scout and would love to help. I'll even pay shipping.

I just wanted to take a minute to say Thank You! I had a number of responses and a few people actually donate old reels that I will use to teach Boy Scouts in my Troop (Troop 433 out of Olney, MD) the fly fishing merit badge.

For those that donated, you should know that the Troop is beginning to plan a fly fishing weekend campout. There is a second dad in the Troop that is helping. Even with the extra help, there is more interest than what the two of us can handle in one class. Of the Scouts that are interested, most have no experience with fly fishing. Some have been able to catch pieces of the merit badge at BSA camps, but haven't been able to complete the requirement due to lack of gear and someone to teach it.

If you can imagine... To teach 5 Scouts, you need 5 of everything (plus 1 more for the instructor). The generosity of the folks here has given these Boy Scouts a start at learning what fly fishing is all about.

You guys are the best!!

Todd

Todd,
Going through the basement and finding more trout fishing stuff to send your troop (line, backing ends for practice knots, VHS training tapes, printed instruction materials, etc.) . Will get it to you by the weekend.

Update: USPS says Monday delivery now!
