Default Opinions on 7/8wt reels

I have an Allen & Co. XL, and I might still get a new Alpha, but for comparison sakes, what would be your opinion(s) if I went with one of the following:

Hardy Uniqua 3
Lamson Radius Mid-Arbor 3.0
Orvis Battenkill Mid-Arbor IV

Axel,

I have some reels that are comparable to your list although I don't have the exact ones you mention.

Lamson; I have a Velocity 3.5, I think a Radius in 3.5 will be better than a 3.0 based on my love for larger reels and backing capacity.

Orvis Mid Arbor IV; The old Hardy Viscount LA Disc 7/8 is somewhat similar in size to the Orvis reel which may be built by Hardy or to Hardy specs. The Viscount 7/8 LA (large arbor) is more of a mid arbor by most design standards and is a good fit with my 7wt rods.

Not a perfect reply but as well as I can do on this,

Ard

If you are going 7/8 wt, I agree with the 3.5 on the Lamson. I use a 3.5 for my 7 wt. and just bought a new spool for my 8 wt. I know the 3.5 is listed as rated for 8/9 but for me it's ideal on my 7 wt.

After briefly thinking smaller is better, I too have come to the conclusion that
bigger is better. I'm using a 3.5" diameter Ross on my 4wt, and it's currently
the smallest reel I own. In the case of the Ross reel, the weight difference
between the reels is almost nothing. The same is true with Lamsons, although
I haven't looked at Orvis's specs lately.

The Radius looked like a really nice design when it was still in Lamson's current
products. More traditional than their other reels, but modern enough. The
Orvis BB carries a lifetime money back satisfaction guarantee, so that's something to consider as well.

While I haven't owned very many reels the Radius was one of them and my least favorite. Maybe I just got a bad one, but the Lamson Velocity I replaced it with is a much nicer reel then the Radius and alot easier to find spools for. Stick with 3.5 for the 8wt.
