All my 8 wt and larger rods are paired with a large arbor of some sort. My 6 and 7 wt rods are a mix of mid and standard arbor. My trout stuff (2- 5 wt) are all standard arbor as it just doesn't seem kosher to go with any but a standard arbour on a light wieght rod.

Since I spend more days fishing saltwater and pike now than trout, I voted large arbor.

I think this thread started after George Jr. took office the second time and I can't remember if I ever answered this.
Moving water I like traditional reels. Click pawl. Big moving water with my 5 or 6w a Lamson Litespeed 1.5
Stillwater, I like the large arbor reels.

I have a 2 weight that I bought the older Battenkill Large Arbor I for. Perfect. 3" diameter and 30 feet of backing.

I think that standard arbor reels look better on lighter weighted rods (4 and down)

But i agree a larger arbor reel looks better on a bigger rod

I grew up fishing standard arbor reels and have never had any problem or issue with them. In my simple and aging mind, they are what a fly reel are supposed to look like.

Large arbor, waste as much aluminum as possible!!! Just like rims on an SUV. I'm holding out for a 24" arbor

I don't dwell too much on that since I recycle all my beer cans. Somehow I know that in one of my l/a reels, there might be a little bit of one of my Keystone Lite cans that found it's way home.

For what I use most, my choice is large arbor. But I don't mind having all styles for the type of rod that the reel is on. Here are the styles I have.

3 weight - standard arbor
4 weight - large arbor
5 weight - standard, large
6 weights - large arbor
8 weight - standard arbor
10 to 12 weights - standard, large

If I were to get new reels for my 8 to 12 weights, I would have all large arbors. But my reels work fine. I know that the reels have years of service left.
