I like to think that rods work as advertised. I do believe in the power of suggestion and its affect on the subconscious human mind. Someone who is an "Expert" suggests that the rods need to be overlined and voilà, people begin to follow the power of the suggestion. A quick study on the use of placebos in medical testing will reinforce any doubts we may harbor in this regard. People like to think that they have made the wheel they bought a "better wheel". It gives us a sense of being and provides a certain reward to the ID (as in Freudian ID) For me the reward in life and to the ID is to see a wheel work as it should and for me to be able to concentrate on traveling on it as opposed to becoming mired in the business of improving upon it.

I pretty much use Ross and Lamson exclusively anymore so I don't think you can go wrong. I have a Lamson Velocity 2 for my 4 wt and that reel is virtually indestrucible. It shows no scratches. I have a Ross FLi for my 5 wt (they don't make it anymore, I believe the Evolution replaced it) and I love it as well.

I would use the common cents system and see what weight the rod really is before I went and thought about overlining it. Very few rods are the actual weight advertised. Alot are close and some are nowhere near what they are supposed to be. There is a data base that people have submitted what their rods tested at. Yours may be on the list. I don't have the link handy, but you can find it pretty easy on the net.

I thought another reel that is not mentioned much is Orvis larger arbor reel. The price is close to Guru. I visited a local Orvis shop and have been contemplating to get one.

Have any of you tried before?
