I have a chance to pick up a used one localy for $50.

jump on that deal. the gunnison, in my opinion, is one of the finest reels ross ever produced. and yes, it should match up fine with your 5 weight.

It will match up fine. I am fishing a G-3 on my 5wt. It is a little heavy for this purpose, but it is a nice reel.

Sounds like a sweet deal depending on condition. Here's a link posted by MP recently that will give you some Ross info: Product Help - Ross Reels USA / Ross Worldwide

Thanks for the help guys. It was on a local message board & I posted an "I'll take it" this morning. Haven't heard from the guy yet but we'll see. If not than It will probably be a new Allen for me... Sounds like I can't loose either way!

If it is in good condition, I'd jump on it if I were you.
I saw a G-2 in new condition on ebay awhile back that sold for well over 300.00. Most nice used ones I've seen go around the 200.00 mark. I think the Gunnison's center drag set the standard for what we have today in high tech reels. IMO! Ross will take care of you should you have any troubles with it or need any parts, except spools.

I am not sure the direction in which 3M is taking Ross, but Ross makes a very limited production run of spare spools each year for discontinued reels (except for Ross Worldwide product). I was able to acquire a pre-98 Gunnison 3 spool for one of my customers.

Oops!
Thanks for correcting me. I forgot about the limited run on the spools!

Hope if anything 3M makes Ross Reels even better with their big money.

Well looks like I got the reel. The guy says it shows normal wear & tear but is in good solid shape & the drag works perfect. should get to lay hands on it in about a week!

Hmmmm....The local fly shop was selling the Gunnisons for $100 each when Ross announced they'd be discountinued. I went there, looked at the case, and finally fondled a couple. After much debate, I bought a G-3. It was a fine looking, smooth reel, and I felt happy. I was so happy, it brought it along to a restaurant that evening, and showed it to the friends I was dining with. We went home, and I parked the Gunnison next to my Pflueger Supremes that were bought on close-out for $20 each! I wondered whether I was worthy of the Gunnison, and then finally returned it a couple of days later. The following day I decided I was worthy of such a reel, but discovered that someone had bought the remaining stock that same day. $50 for a good reel? Heck yeah!
