Just an observation that many old rod cork grips can discolor to a point where they may look stained.
I don't actually know what causes this but if you were to wash it with something mildly abrasive like cleanser or dish machine detergent, it should take care of the problem

Thanks Rip and Marco but this is definitely stain and I just started and it seems to be cleaning up quite nicely with the sandpaper. I not familiar with this x wrap but I'll check it out. This is an old glass rod which is something I've always enjoyed using so I'm not sure if I want to change it from the original look. Thank you for the suggestions.

It's heavy gauge heat shink tubing that's flocked to give in a no slip surface.

Nice looking stuff ! Like the sticks to! Hmmm...might have to convert one of my Lamiglass sticks and lose the cork tape. See what you started!

No need to strip it, you just shrink in right over the corktape.
