Finding the spine on all the pieces wasn't a piece of cake. Hope I got it right.

Don't stress about it too much. Lots of folks just build on the straightest axis. Enjoy the build!

It's been a long and very frustrating day. While test casting the rod with the guides taped in place, the top piece broke..!
Then, as I was enquiring whether I could get a replacement part, I discovered the blank isn't from Batson, though the color is quite similar. The butt is a different diameter though. I hadnt checked. The markings are different too, it seems ("8'6 4/5" printed).
Seems my nephew's been sold a fake - or he assumed it was a Batson... He bought it on the Net, probably on the e-.... site.
End of the project

Is it a bad break (like there are "good" breaks!)? Is it repairable? At least to a state of rod usability? Maybe not something you'd throw for precision, but still usable as a fun rod?
If there is a "better" time for a rod to break, it's before you've invested time and monies into the components and the build. I'm sorry.

Well, now that you have had all this practice...I guess it's time to buy a blank!

Yes, pretty bad break, a couple inches above the junction between the third and fourth pieces. But as you say, sooner is better than later.
I doubt there is any warranty. I can't imagine my nephew investing more than $30-$40. We'll see. He'll be disappointed.
I am not too eager to invest in a blank after this experience. It's very time consuming too. I only tried it to use my nephew's blank (having it built would have been too costly, definitely not worth it on a cheap blank).
Anyway, thanks for your advice!
Have a nice week guys!
