You are sooooo screwed when it comes to color selection. I don't think there is a wrong color for a gray blank. That means your selection choices just went thru the roof.

Yeah, thanks a lot Pete.

As if I don't belabor these decisions enough already. It might be hard, but I'd love to find and old throw away blank that is at least close to this matte grey, then buy a half dozen spools and do a bunch of tests wraps with finish.

Or just go with black...

Some years ago at a yard sale, I bought a crate of fishing stuff that included 50+ spools of rod wrapping thread. All different colors.
And yet when I build a new rod, they all seem to get green or garnet colored wraps

Maybe you should branch out a little bit ... try some blue or brown, go nuts man!

Test wraps are what the butt end is for . Wrap all you want, strip it off and then install the handle and seat where the wraps were. To quote somebody on this forum: "go nuts man!"

Yes I did that on the last rod, on the area the reel seat covered so I didn't strip it off. Isn't it a pain in the @ss to strip the finish off?
