9 foot 5 or 6 weight is the norm in Michigan with the vast majority using the 6. Durring the hex and white fly hatches however, ive seen people going as small as 3 and 4 wich is to light in my opinion. I can not turn a largish smallie with a six weight so i cannot imagine useing a three or four.

I use both 4 and 6wt for smallies, but a 6wt IMO would fit your needs. As for blanks, Tfo blanks are nice and reasonable, American Tackle Matrix blanks are real nice also, these are good alternatives if not wanting to spend alot.Good luck on your Rod!!!
