Default unmarked fly rods

Hi,
I have a couple fly rods, one bamboo and one graphite that I picked up at yard sales. Now, the problem is they are unmarked as to what weight they are so I don't know what line to use on them.

Here is the question, how do you determine the weight of an unmarked fly rod so you know what size line to use?

Dave

...or..
You could just try a couple of different lines and see what you like.

The rod length is a good indicator of where you could start
... a vintage bamboo that's 8' is most likely a 6wt. and rods 8'6"-9' could be 6wt-8wt. A 9wt would be rare and be at least 9'

Graphite rods would have more variation but I'd bet that there is not many under 8' that are heavier than a 5wt and rods of 8'-8'6" are most likely a 5 or a 6wt, maybe a 7
Don't bet the farm on it though, it's possible to find an early 8' 4wt and I have a glass 6'6" rod that's a 6wt

LOL!!!!

I'd suggest RipTide's approach. As scientific as that article appears, it would
be just as easy to try a few line weights. If you know an expert/excellent
caster, they could probably be a huge help.

Well,

I have 3, 4, and 5 wt lines I can try, so I guess I will just give them a try and see what feels right.

Thanks for the input.

Hi webrx,

I would try your 5wt first. Rip is right about the bamboo rod. More than likely it will be a 6wt or an 8wt.
