New England Waters

Hi -
New here and hoping to return to fishing after a long layoff (many years).
I have an older Redington Red Start 8' 5/6 weight 2 piece beginner setup that served its purpose back in the day.

I want to upgrade a little and am looking at a St Croix Avid 5 weight.
Currently I don't run in fishing circles anymore so online is my primary source.

For the waters of new england would a 9' 5 weight Avid be a good choice? Or is the 8'6" a better length? Or something else...
This will be an allround rod for streams, rivers of NE, maybe an occasional ocean trip and likely out west every year or two.

Thanks for any advice.

Re: New England Waters

no good for the ocean, but otherwise either one will do for freshwater
