You know S&S, given how long they have been in business, the Winston company has weathered many storms yet still manages to exist and produce much loved rods.
A tour of their facility is very telling as it shows some of the products they made during very hard times just to keep the doors open and the name intact. One that stuck with me was a small, steel rod with spreaders and stays (as used on sailboat masts for support) that was sold to dredge up halibut during the great depression. They also had a few bamboo rods on display that helped the user win world casting competitions.
If they can survive todays business world of buy-outs and take-overs autonomously that would be great but then this business model hasn't seemed to hurt sales of Sage fly rods. Winston may lose their soul but they could gain market share through an investment firm with the right shot-in-the-arm for marketing and distribution as Sage did through their owners: Joshua Green Corporation*>*Home

And I want them to stay in buisness. With the World Seeries in progress, allow an analogy: A great baseball franchise is comprised of ownership of means who manage the finances and have the wisdom to hire the best baseball people to run baseball operations. Yes, Far Bank ownes Sage, Shimano owns G.Loomis and behind-the-scenes wealth is behind Scott...Winston's owner has deep pockets but the difference is (which is the starting premis of this thread) all thoes companies are run by great fly fisherman, casters and rod design experts but Winston is not. Winston seems to be run by buisness intrests and has been unable to retain or lost the loyalty of the terrific fly rod people that came with the aquisition of the company. I am not talking about the qualaties of their recent rods, that is better discussed in the George Anderson 5-Weight Shoot Out thread. I am talking about the culture and art of fly rod design which seems alive and well in Twin Bridges but who is developing new product composits and tapers at the biggest factory in town?
