Default What is this rod?

Hello all, I'm new to fly fishing. My 90 year old father-in-law gave me on old fly rod in a metal tube rapped in a 3 pocket cloth. I thing the rod is made out of bamboo but am not sure. The only writing on it is "Sloan's Favorite 8' 1 3/4 F". Is this rod too old to use? Thanks for any info.

If you can, please post a few pic's,close up of the grip and reel seat, and a regular shot of the rod broken down,we will see if we can help you out.
In the meen time i would NOT fish this rod,It would be a shame to hurt it before you know what you have.

Do a search for "Microsoft Power Tools" and download the free resizer. After downloading and installing it, right click on the picture and select "resize image" or try using imageshack.com It is free. I hope this helps.

try this as a starting point: from NY Times obit.

He was an internationally recognized environmentalist and sportsman and served as Adjunct Professor of Marine Biology at the University of Miami Rosensteil School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences. He was also the author of four books, holder of 44 World's Records & host of the syndicated radio show ''The Fishing Zone''.

The rod might have been named to recognize Sloan as a fishing "celebrity" of the time, not unusual during pre WW2 days . Hard to say who the maker was however. Long shot, good luck.

Wow!,well you have a definite cane rod there, and looks to have some serious age to it as well, and in nice shape. One question,i can't tell from the pictures but is the reel seat plastic,or look like its been replaced?
I will try to do a little research for ya and see if i can come up with anything.
