Default Winston Passport

Any experience with the Winston Passport? Saw it had pretty good reviews in the Yellowstone Anglers 5wt Shootout. I'm looking to buy a blank and build up the rod. I noticed the Passport didn't rate to well in Craftsmanship, but since I'm building the rod I'm hoping to better that. I currently have a Sage LL 590-3 and I'm building a TFO Finesse 8'9" 4 wt. I want to decide on another blank to order to have it in time to build the first week of January. I'm thinking about the Passport in a 9' 5wt or 8'6" 5 wt. Thanks.

I have a 590-4 Passport and am very happy with it. The only complaint I have is that the lock-nut on the reel seat likes to loosen up and I have to tighten it every once in a while. For the money, it has a lot of bang for the buck. In my opinion, the Passport is accurately described in the 5wt shootout.

I was looking into a 9' 4wt Passport blank. There's a shop in Oregon that sells them online for $99, but when I was going through the checkout, Oregon sales tax was added. I've never had to tax for an out of state purchase, and was too lazy to call.....

That's a great price. I was thinking about purchasing from J Stockard (bought the Finesse blank from them) and they are asking $136.95 for the Passport blank. I'll look on-line for the Oregon store.

Hope you canceled the transaction, that sounds like a scam

Oregon doesn't have sales tax- Department of Revenue Sales tax information

My mistake. It's Angler's Workshop in Washington state. I never dealt with them before, so I'll give them a call tomorrow.

I have a 9' 6wt Acsent, the model before the passport. One of the rod sections has a width wise crack where it fits up into the ferrule. I don't know if I smacked it against something, or the the crack has sprung due to manufactorer's fault. So far its held up quite nicely. In my experience, Winston's rods (minus the Boron models) have nice and smooth actions so it would work great in a 5 wt model especially if you like nymphing.

I don't know if they updated the cork on the passport vs the Ascent, but its not fantastic, but you're building from a blank so you get most of the cons out of the way.

Hope it turns out well!

Angler's Workshop is a good reputable store up here in the PNW. I want to say that Washington passed a law recently charging sales "internet" tax on all online transactions from Washington stores. I can't remeber specifically though. That may be the problem if that is what happened.

I called Angler's Workshop, and they have a backorder of 1-2 weeks on the Passport blanks. They told me that the sales tax will be removed when they reprocess the order on their end.

Washington state internet sellers are supposed to collect sales tax on state residents. Businesses not based in Washington state aren't required to collect sales tax from customers in the state; state residents are supposed to pay the tax themselves: No sales tax on the invoice?
