This year, my fourth fly fishing and fortieth on this planet I decided to pickup a special rod and reel that I would have forever and hopefully pass onto family or friend after I make that final cast.
I got a CF Burkheimer DAL 9' 5wt. Black translucent blank. With Koa wood insert. We honeymooned in Kauai and Koa wood was everywhere.
I really liked the smoked nickel hardware and black wraps.
I was going to have Kerry Burkheimer put my birthday on it, but it ended up with my name instead. Happy accident? I think it worked out well.
Not the reel intended for it (that's still coming), but doing fine.
I hope that everyone can enjoy a past time they really love.
And, in doing so acquire a sentimental object.
Maybe a bat, a favorite glove, a close relative’s shotgun or maybe a certain rod that just feels right in your hand.
It becomes more than an object.
It transports you into that past time when you can’t actually do it.
It’s material that eventually becomes the immaterial.
The memories you make with it, the feeling you get when using it, replaces the object and eventually carries on to the next person.
When they hold it they learn a little about you.
When they cast it they learn what you loved.
