Fly rod for SW Virginia trout??

My son is moving to SW Virginia near Christiansburg west of the Blue Ridge Mtns. What would be a good all-round trout rod to get him started in that area? I'm thinking of an 8'6" 5wt or a 8'6" 4wt or should I be considering something different? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

That's a bit south of me. But, if he can do it, I'd have a 5wt or 6wt. for the larger rivers to the east and north (James) and a 3wt for the smaller brookie creeks in the mountains to the west.

You can get a decent 3wt for about $75 bucks.

Out of the two you mention, if you had to do just one, I'd do the 5wt. It might be a bit much in the smaller blue lines but a little light on big water.
