The worst rod(s) I've ever had excluding cheap rods are almost every St Croix rod I've ever had. I'm a medium action guy and the St Croixs are rated at least one sometimes more categories slower than they really are. I even bought a Avid advertised as a medium action rod, I had to overline it by a full line size to get it to medium action. I do admit now that its over lined it casts great. I realize that St Croixs are great quality rods I just hate the way they measure the action of their rods. I would classify a new action for most of their products called "Broomstick". I wish the industry would come up with a reliable scale of rating actions so a medium or fast action is the same across the board.

Zug;

Really like your discussion as I have too many rods that take over-lining to get a good feel our of them, for instance a 6wt Axiom that does well with a 7wt but can sling an 8wt Bass Bug but feels dead with less than 75' of 6wt out..

I feel before long the worship at the alter of fast rods will fade and we'll see more & more moderate rods out there.

I have a 6 weight TFO TiCrX that I would describe the same way. (Heavier than it needs to be, too.) I wouldn't put it in a "worst rods" pile, though. It's just rated for the wrong line. In the right situations it shines, even though it's not the all-rounder I was hoping it would be.

I have a TFO TiCrX also in 8wt and it is very fast action but it was advertised as that so I knew what I was buying. I use it for throwing really big streamers to trout, I hope to take it to the coast and do get in a little salt action also. My issue isn't really with St Croix its with the industry not having a standerized method of measuring actions so rod models can be compared apples to apples

Sage Launch series fly rod. The worst cork handle I've ever seen in my life. I'll never buy another one. It's way to stiff anyway.

Sweet and Salt, I must ask, Have you ever fished Drys on the Holy Water of the Ausable? That B IIX 4 weight was one of the most popular rods for sale at Gates Lodge.

As far as my worse rods. I started with a Diawa, it was REALLY bad but I was like 14 and didn't know the difference. I did have a Sage RPL+ 8 1/2 5wt which was a terrible dry fly rod but could throw Bass Bugs like a champ. It was physically impossible to land a fly soft with that rod with anything but a roll cast. That rod took me off Sage for a long time. The two bigger B IIx Winstons 9' 8 wt and 10 wt. I owned were worthless in the wind or with a head which are the basic purposes of 8 and 10 weights.

Not rods I have owned....but...

I have cast many different rods from TFO and St Croix...Actually, I should say fished. Words cant describe the disappointment. They make these rods on purpose??? Really???

I know...I know...Some folks love them. Just not me!

I can usually find a place in the quiver for most rods.

The worst rod I've had is the one where the tip broke and I didn't have an extra in the truck .

This is kind of like a "what's the best color" thread. I'm happy fishing just about anything 3-8 weight, slow-med to med-fast action.

I don't like super slow rods, and I don't like super fast rods.

When Fenwick introduced the HMG graphite rods I bought one. It was I believe 1978 and I was looking to try graphite without throwing down for the Orvis rods. By the time I got hold of that Fenwick I had been messing around casting for more than a decade and I was looking for something to elevate my game. The truth is that I just didn't like the rod, I couldn't make it work half as good as my fiberglass rods. I stayed the course and had some of the worst days I had experienced since back when I was first learning. In 1979 the Fenwick was sold for 65 dollars, I paid 125 I believe. I did buy an Orvis rod that year and that's when I knew that it wasn't my imagination about the HMG rods performance.

That rod had black shafts and was a 5 weight, labeled HMG. If you ever get the hankering for a vintage Fenwick I would advise you to pass on the early HMG series rods.
