Default First Fly Rod Purchase

I posted a few things in my member intro thread, but thought I'd also post here since I have a rod question and more folks would probably see it. I just bought my first fly reel, a Pflueger Purist, and I need to pick up a rod to go with it. I've got a $100 gift card to Academy, so I'd like to stick to whatever I can get there. Seems like two choices, Okuma SLV or St. Croix Rio Santo.

If I'm right, its best to buy the best rod you can afford. The Okuma is $60, and the St Croix is $120, but I also have a 20% off coupon for purchases over $100, so the St Croix would be right at $100.

As a beginner, would I be able to tell the difference between the St Croix and the Okuma? The St Croix would probably last me as long as I want it to, anybody got any opinions on the durability of the Okuma SLV?

If the St Croix is head and shoulders above the Okuma, I really don't mind picking it up, but the Okuma would leave me some $$ on the card to pick up a few other things while I'm there as well.

I almost feel like this is a dumb question and I should just go with my gut and get the St Croix.

Never fished the Okuma, but I have fished the St. Croix. I loved it, too.

Here is the review I wrote for it

You absolutely can't go wrong with it.

I have a Rio Santo 7wt and i'm pretty happy with it. Very solid rod, fast action (for me anyway - I'm normally a Orvis superfine guy), and absolutely has the power to pull bass out of weeds when chucking large frog patterns.

i had a slv rod rod a few years ago and did not care for it at all. it was very "dead" feeling and not very fun to cast. i would steer clear of those rods. imho
i looked at the rio santo and it has a 5 year warranty vs. the slv which is 1 year.
i say get the st. croix

casey

Hi,

Welcome to the forum, I missed your intro thread so I say it here. It looks like everyone who replied agrees with you.

St. Croix,
