Same tapers as the Boron rods...just sans Boron so they weight a touch more and some say lack a bit of stiffness in the butt section though i dont find this to be the case. Winston calls these the nicest graphite rods on the market and while opinions vary i will say they are not far off base imho. I have cast several of the GVX select and the tapers are the same, just the changes in the reel seat as previously mentioned.

Does anyone know if the GVX is based on BIII or BII tapers? I'd assume BIII?

This may be true as these rods were out before the BIIIX but having cast the whole line up i have to say they feel a bit different than the BII. They dont have that floppy tip wich imho was a bit too soft. It may be that they are tweaked boron tapers but i couldnt be sure and i dont think anyone will ever know. All i can say is they are GREAT tapers.

Does anyone know who is designing these and newer Winston tapers? I am pleased to hear they have lost the terrible tip.

Annette McLean though I may have mis spelled that terribly. She's also responsible for the biiix and the biiisx. She's the head designer in twin bridges these days

Yup. Annette McLean herself says of the GVX "It's 'action' is much like the BIIx series, however there is no boron in this rod."

She should know. Here's a good video on the topic, with McLean doing the speaking. Lots of background noise, but oh well.

Well there you have it...i would say she's pretty good as the iiix and iiisx are some of Winston's best ever...better than their direct predecessors anyways and without any big tech leaps...
