Kabuto sells a white fiberglass blank and they seem to go at premium prices. We have several good finishers on the forum, one would probably do a blank for you. Search Kabuto Fly Rods and you'll find the Home Page.

Re: white fly rod??

The outfit sells blanks too I think. There are very few white blanks that I know of. If I were determined to have a white rod I would buy whatever blank I wanted and then lightly scuff the blanks with #400 emery cloth paper. Follow this with several very light coats of pearl / metal flake / white finish in an acrylic enamel and viola' a pearl finish blank.

I say acrylic enamel because it will be compatible with a top coat of rod finish over the finished rod. If you use a base color coat that has the same properties as the clear coat you will finish with, the base coat may (I said may) re-emulsify and that is bad no matter what you are finishing.

Think about that.................. I could do it, I don't want to but I know it could be done. You would just have to be careful while working on the blank dressing the guides not to scratch the finish. After 2 top coats of clear rod epoxy the finish will be good. Many blanks are painted in some way or another.............

Yah, Mudhole sells them and so does Sexyloops.

The sexyloops white rod is a 9' 6 wt. and is designed by one or more of the top distance casters on the planet. (Paul Arden sp.?) It's a gun from what I hear. Not sure if you can get it in white as a blank.

The one from Mudhole is the 9' 5 wt. 4 pc. MHX blank. Supposedly a fast top end type blank. I have no personal information on it one way or the other. The part number is F905-4-W-MHX. It goes for a price of $113.50.

Personally I think you could do some pretty sharp custom stuff on a white blank. If you want to do white you should. I like the idea.

Dan,

What do you think about my 'make your own white blank' idea posted above? I would do it if I wanted a custom color rod. Did you get me message off your phone?

Epic has white fiberglass rod blanks they call nude. But priced near 300. I think that other rod manufacturers have offered white for casting instructors In the past such as Echo, Scott.

Larry,
Thanks for the plug.

Epic's "Nude" is natural fiberglass with no color coat. What you see is what you get so you never have to worry about chipping the paint. Remember when you look at the Epic web site that the prices are in New Zealand $$$$ The blanks go for about $250 in US $$$$. They have a button that will show US prices.

Pricey? After building on the "Nude" and casting it, I would definately say no. Quality all the way. And no, I am not a sales rep, I just love Glass and Bamboo.
