Default Broke my Winston today

So, I was out casting today and the tip section of my BIII-SX snapped in half. I don't know what happened! I must have knicked or dented it at some point. WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHY!!!!

Carson:
The same thing happened to my wife while we were fishing on the Missouri in Montana. She borrowed a rod from the fly shop and on our return to Texas I sent it in to Winston. They replaced the top piece and returned it to us within a month. All ended well!
Not to diminish your frustration but someone once told me that as long as no one is bleeding, all is well!
Good luck,
barham

That's too bad! I have mostly Sage rods but since hearing that sintrix rods are 60% stronger I'm leaning toward a Zenith for my next one.

Sorry to hear of your loss.... As mentioned above, Winston stands by their product so a repaired / replaced rod should not be an issue. I on the other hand once lost my favorite 4 wt Winston in the bottom of a small rapid. I put too much faith in a canoeing buddy of mine. I trusted him enough to fish while we canoed down the middle fork of the Boise river..... Came to a bend in the river only to find a much larger rapid than we had first suspected. Also, as mentioned above, no blood was involved, so all ended well. I am guessing there are many interesting stories behind lost or broken rods.... Lets see who will share.

I have a friend that lost a 6,000 dollar custom built flintlock in the bottom of New River on a reenactment/canoe trip. I don't know if'd I'd have survived the trauma were I him.

If the tip section snapped 'in the middle' odds on it started with a 'fly strike' on a foward cast. If it broke just above a ferrel odds on the sections came loose. Either way, a total pain where one sits.

My stupid was sticking two rods through the back window of the car (short trip to next run) and it started to rain. Guess who had electronic roll up windows ....... and the brain of a Nat.

Coming round a bend in the Beav with my bud on the sticks, the Clacka was pushed harder into the corner than we anticipated. His ONE with Super 5 was rigged with the fly on a forward guide and leader wrapped around the reel. A thin branch on a dead willow at the apex snagged between the line and rod and yanked it out of the boat. It hung by its tip top, Abel bouncing to the current's beat, as we swept down river.

We franticly tried to drop the hook but the run was 4' deep and too strong. It was a quarter mile before a riffle appeared ahead and we were able to anchor. Leaping from the boat my partner raced through the willow thickets and swampy channels upstream toward his prized outfit and, as the fragile twig bent and threatened to loose it precarious hold at any moment, he reached out and saved his Sage.

Years ago, another friend made a similar error on the same river nearly flipping the drift boat. That deadfall alder was a bigger tree and his rod was thrown from the boat, a Loomis GLX Max Line Speed with an original Charlton reel. It was never recovered and he still missis it to this day. Has anyone here ever found such an outfit downstream of High Bridge a ways?

We have suffered virtually no rod breakage in these many seasons of Idaho/Montana adventures but have come close to or actually lost rods in so many ways I could compose a book chapter about it. Maybe someday.

I was fishing streamers in the North Fork of the White river a couple of months ago. I was so involved in the fishing that I didn't see the upcoming rapid. I had to quickly reel up and get to paddling. However, it was too late. There were lots of over-hanging trees on the bank and I proceeded to put my paddle in the air to protect myself from getting stabbed or close-lined by the branches. Over I went. I lost my eight-weight, reel, line, fly, leader... My pack, kayak, and gear went downstream. My paddle was lodged under a submerged branch and when I broke it loose, the branch broke and slammed against both of my shins. I recovered my gear and kayak, but the rod was lost... Best of all, I landed NO trout that day...

Thumbs up Re: Broke my Winston today

Not quite that type of 'disaster' but close in a drift boat. Think that was about the last time I had the boat on the water before I sold same. Life suggests/tells you when you've passed a point of no return if you rely screw it up?
