Exclamation Rod Buying Tip #1

I committed the cardinal sin of rod buying this weekend....

NEVER try a rod that is outside your budget because then you will try to justify the purchase.

Backstory: Looking for a 6wt to use while targeting carp, LMB and redfish in the fall. Tried out the TFO Mini-Mag, TFO BVK, Sage Approach, Sage Access and went outside my budget to try the Sage VXP. Wanted to try the TFO Mangrove but they didn't have it. Long story short, freaking loved the VXP. Especially with the Rio Smallmouth line my LFS special ordered for me.

Still trying to decide which way to go but if I am not carfeul my wife will

Hahahahha sounds familiar, I think almost all of us have made irresponsible tackle purchases, I mean if your on this forum your most likely obsessed with fishing gear. As for the vxp, that rod is one of the most underrated rods on the market, at the $500 price point its simply amazing. Easily my favorite rod currently.

Good luck staying out of your wife's crosshairs on this one!

I believe if it's not what you really want, why buy it, since you'll only wish you held out the one you wanted.

Cheaper in the long run to just buy the rod you actually want, rather than a couple of cheaper ones that you won't be happy with.

And... Its better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission. (But my wife isn't listening )

You have it easy; when I buy a "better" rod, my wife wants one too.

For those that are interested, if I had to rank the rods I tried, they would be:

1. Sage VXP
2. Sage Access
3. TFO BVK
4. Sage Approach
5. TFO Mini Mag 200-300

The Mini Mag is advertised as a 6-8 but I think it would be happier with a 7 or 8 on than the SA GPX 6 I tried.

Really want a rod with a fighting butt since I will be using it for carp and redfish (in the fall) so that ruled out the Access. Nervous about the BVK due to all the breakage strories.

Need to track down a TFO Mangrove to try.
