battling the wind-rod strategy

fishing small streams with an 8'6 -4 wt

wonder if higher wt..say 6 wt...would be solution

or would shorter rod would help me cast into winds

in small streams with brush and trees there is not much room for error the cast

fish seldom above 12"

any thoughts?

Re: battling the wind-rod strategy

The first thing that jumps out at me is the 8'6" rod. I fish small streams with a 7'6" 4wt, and smaller streams with a 6'6" 4wt.
I do have a 6'6" 6wt but there's no real advantage.
I fish the small streams on purpose when it's windy as in close quarters like that, the wind is less of an issue

Re: battling the wind-rod strategy

The best tool for casting in wind is to adjust the size of the loop in the cast to a "tight loop". This is achieved through practice at quickening the stroke of the rod and shortening the length of the rod stroke. By watching the line on both the back cast and the forward cast you will know when you have increased the line speed and closed the loop. I have learned to run a cast about 1 - 1.5' between the upper and lower parts of the line while casting in wind or for situations where accuracy is the order.

When the wind is really strong you must do as described above and shorten the distances you expect to cast. If you persist in going for long lines in high winds you will quickly learn that the term "Wind Knot" is not just urban legend.

I hope that is of help,

Ard

Yep, a tight loop is the key. Also, switching off to nymphs or streamers may be easier than casting a light, fluffy dry fly.

You go to a 6wt when the fly or fish size warrants it. Doubt you'll encounter that much on a small stream.
