Well, I was fishing this weekend and I broke the tip on my Orvis Superfine Touch. I was climbing up a snowy bank, slipped, and apparently smacked the tip against something because, when I got to level ground, I found that the tip-top guide was snapped off.
Orvis has me covered but I thought I'd mention this to folks as a kind of long term review of the rod because this is the fourth time I've broken the tip section in two years of using it. I realized after the first time (snapped the tip while trying to pop an ice ball out of the tip-top guide) that the tip section on the 4wt SFT has a very, very thin cross-section. Once I noted this I attempted to be careful but I use this rod the most of any of my rods and I still broke it three more times.
So, I have to conclude that this rod is just too fragile for me. I fish a lot, I'm hard on gear, I admit this, but I'm not overtly negligent and I've never had any other rod break like this so often. Well, as a matter of fact, I haven't broken the tip of a rod in decades.
I refuse to change my angling style so, sadly (very sadly -- I love this rod), I'm shopping for something a tad more rugged to be my go to rod. I'll get this one repaired but it's a backup/limited use item now and I might even sell it to finance the next rod.
Anyway, take care of your SFT. Watch that tip section.
