It depends on parts availability. Last year I broke a 5 wt SP and they replaced it with a ZXL. Initially they said they would roll a new blank section. If your not fishing your rod for fear of breaking it, That amounts to the same as not having the rod because it's broke.

My Sage XP is also my favorite 5 weight.....so I would assume they still have some on hand or else maybe they give you the VXP...which I have not cast. My preference would be for the "original" so to speak. If you break yours....and sage gas none left - just make me an outlandish generous offer I can't refuse for mine and we'll talk LOL

If you love it that much then keep an eye on Ebay for another one as insurance.

Contact Sage - our local dealer in South Africa sorted someone out with a section for an XP 490-4 which would have come from Sage.

Like Bloo said, buy another as backup and fish your favorite rod without fear! The Sage Generation IIIe rods have proven to be darn near indestructible over the years outside of accidental falls, car doors and tailgate incidents.

I had a Hardy Zenith that needed repair. In speaking with them, they had spare sections they sell. Would Sage do the same thing and have parts? If you can't find a backup on Ebay, perhaps a spare tiptop section from Sage?

One thing to consider here is that Zenith is still fairly current although the new replacement seems to be the Zephrus. I'll be curious to see how Pure/Hardy handle repairs/replacement going forward given the new line of rods and reels under Pure's leadership.

The XP has been out of production since 2006, but still one of Sage's best selling rods. They will sometimes make replacement parts and other times offer another option. I suspect this depends on what they have on hand at the time and how quickly some may be in need of replacement. Have to agree though, the best insurance policy is to look for another rod on the 2nd hand market.

A buddy of mine stopped by the Sage factory to get a tour while he was on vacation last year. He had built up an RPL for a friend years ago, and the friend recently broke the rod tip. He said they have a machine there at the factory that has all the tapers programmed in it, and sheets upon sheets of different types of carbon fiber. He watched as they pulled up the program, assembled the correct mandrels, and rolled a new section right in front of him. According to him Sage has the ability to roll any section of any rod model pretty much on demand!
