Yes, especially with spey casting and improper technique...

A little wax on the ferrules will ensure that doesn't happen though...

Funny that I'm seeing this thread for the first time, and my son just had his Orvis Access 5wt break - a full water bottle fell out of a cupholder and landed on the rod, which was laying on the floor of our minivan, and cleanly snapped the tip section in two - Not as easy as Orvis just replacing the rod tip section of this 4 piece rod - I had to ship the whole rod, in it's tube to Orvis ($16 by UPS) and wait for an response/estimate (a minimum $30 handling fee, and thats for their rods carrying the 25 year guarantee, which this model does not) - I'm curious to see how this turns out, dollar-wise.

Joe,

Sorry to hear that one, I learned the hard way myself. The only rods I ever broke were not in their tubes when they were not in use. Never again, if I am moving from place to place I have an auto / truck exterior rod rack for fully rigged rods and if I can't use that because of distance to the next river they get tubed up................ Bummer, did you punch into the poll data?

I read this thread the other day and have kept it top-of-mind ever since. I think I'm at least twice as careful now as I would have been without all the horror stories.

I'm always happy to learn from others' mistakes! Great thread!

Thank you,

That was actually the idea when I did it. I wanted every new and old fly fisher alike to be able to see the many ways that our precious rods get 'snapped'.

I'm more than happy to hear that it is a benefit to you,

Ard
